Backyard Bounty

Backyard Bounty

Sometimes you do not need to travel that extra mile. Your own backyard is probably a treasure trove of incredible sightings, such as this mating pair of atlas moths Attacus atlas photographed in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai. Within city limits, those who venture forth could see one of the world’s largest moths that boasts a wingspan of between 22 to 30 cm.

Interestingly, atlas moths accumulate enough fat reserves to fly long distances to find a mate, and soon after mating the male dies. When her eggs are laid, the female dies too. Neither has any mouth parts, and they do not feed at all as adults.
