Shrinking fragments

The average size of forest fragments in the Western Ghats, a highly fragmented biodiversity hotspot, is already alarmingly small; a meagre 3.94 sq. km., with an average of 220 metres of road per sq. km. Any further forest loss will result in patches too small in size to sustain much of the region's biodiversity, drastically reducing the quality of ecosystem services, and impacting crucial ecological processes.
