In 2004, the World Social Forum (WSF) was held in Goregaon, Mumbai, bringing together activist groups to develop alternatives to global economic policies. Sanctuary reported in 'It’s the Ecology, Stupid!' (Sanctuary Asia, Vol. 24, No. 1, February 2004) that while the WSF attracted over 100,000 people, the absence of ecological issues from the agenda was disturbing. Legendary Activist and Sanctuary Lifetime Service Awardee <a href="https://sanctuarynaturefoundation.org/article/meet-vandana-shiva">Dr. Vandana Shiva</a>, pictured here along with Edward (Teddy) Goldsmith, Editor, The Ecologist, said: “Environmental topics did not receive good coverage at the WSF. Issues such as pollution, global warming, and sustainable use of resources were worth more than the few seminars scheduled. But they were not deemed important.
