Drass Valley, Ladakh

Himalayan Brown Bear: “In October 2021, I was in Drass valley in Ladakh, where I trekked for four days through steep terrain with my heavy gear in the hope of spotting a Himalayan brown bear. The bears usually descend to lower elevations around the villages searching for food, to fatten up before winter hibernation. One evening, as I was returning to my homestay with my guide and driver, we spotted this massive adult bear by the roadside in the light of our headlamps. Predictably, it was there scavenging for food from the city garbage dump. What a night!”
