Grey-headed Swamphen
<p>A Grey-headed Swamphen <em>Porphyrio poliocephalus</em> feeds on water hyacinth <em>Eichhornia crassipes</em> flowers in Bilimora, Gujarat. Water hyacinth, native to South America, was brought to India in the late 18th century for its beautiful purple-blue flowers. Since then, the plant has escaped from garden ponds and rapidly taken over our waterbodies, choking native plants and fish. The Grey-headed Swamphen is native to the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East but is an introduced species in North America, where it has now established itself in the swamps of Florida.</p>
