Mottled Wood-Owl

Mottled Wood-Owl: Roads to nowhere.

Owls, and birds might seem the unlikeliest of animals to be victims of roadkills. Yet, this Mottled Wood-Owl found its end on the busy Hunsur Highway in Karnataka, where the photographer captured this poignant image of little more than a mass of twisted feathers. The owl was probably flying low in search of rodents when it was hit by a speeding car. We can only speculate whether the owl was blinded by bright headlights, or was unable to swerve in time. Every year, thousands of of animals are killed by speeding vehicles on roads passing through, or skirting, biodiverse Protected Areas.
