A PREEN A DAY

A shikra is photographed preening on its tree perch. Birds spend ample time preening their feathers, using their beak to remove dust and parasites, re-position feathers in primal angles for flight, and coat them with an oily substance from the preen gland (at the base of the tail), which keeps feathers flexible and waterproof. Though usually a personal habit, sometimes preening is performed socially, known as allopreening.
