<p>Can you spot the ghostly gaze of the tiger in the above image? Here’s a hint: look along the left edge of the image. Zakhuma Don, a veteran conservationist, placed a borrowed camera trap in Mizoram’s Dampa Tiger Reserve in 2021 and captured this image. India has a long history of camera trapping, the earliest being F. W. Champion’s beautiful black and white tiger images, which were published in The Illustrated London News in 1925. Conservationists and researchers such as <a href="https://www.sanctuarynaturefoundation.org/article/meet-dr.-ullas-karanth" target="_blank">Dr. K. Ullas Karanth</a> and Dr. Anish Andheria began using camera traps for their studies in the early 90s, while the Forest Departments began using camera traps to estimate tiger populations as late as 2006.
